![]() well, I can say that it’s going to be narrative, open world and focused on the Infected and combat with them. The strategy is simple - improve, update and tweak the core elements of the game so they’re more in line with the community's expectations and move further only then. not much as we want to focus on answering some of the most pressing community expectations before moving further. What can you tell me about the next DLC drop? Shacknews: It sounds like you want to take Dying Light 2 Stay Human to some exciting new places in 2023. ![]() So this year players can expect huge updates to the brutality and physicality of our combat system, the flow and realism of our parkour and - of course! - the horrors of the night. and it turned out that the scary night was actually a crucial part of the experience that gave it its feel and identity. Based on that data we wanted to make the night more accessible in the second game. A great example is the night experience - so scary in the first game that the majority of our gamers skipped it altogether, using a safe zone option that allowed that. and because of that we might have overlooked a few things that were more important to the community than we thought. Smektala: I think this was the most difficult part of the project - we wanted to try new things, do so much more than in the first game. Shacknews: How tough was it to make Dying Light 2 similar to the original while also evolving the formula, in terms of both combat and traversal? But I’m very proud of what the team has achieved during that time. Another challenge came from the fact that we changed the technology powering the game as we started the project - and it always creates a number of unexpected difficulties. Smektala: The period was generally quite difficult for everyone, mostly because of the pandemic that paralyzed the whole world. Shacknews: Going further back to the development cycle, what sort of challenges presented themselves when looking to expand upon the original Dying Light with a sequel? ![]() I’m very happy with how the game was received, even though having it out in the hands of millions revealed some issues we weren’t able to identify before the release. Of course we were anxious to learn and see what the players will say, but I think it’s a feeling that all developers share on the brink of the release. Tymon Smektala, Dying Light Franchise Lead: To be honest that period is all a blur - it was so tense, so emotional, filled to the brim with expectations and pressure. What was the atmosphere among the game's developers? Were there any concerns over how the game would be received or about the game's quality, given that it had to be delayed more than once? Before getting into the game's future, I want to revisit the weeks leading up to its release. Shacknews: Dying Light 2: Stay Human is now a year old. Smektala talks about the first year of Dying Light 2, some of the challenges of the game's development, and what the future holds for the game and for Techland as a whole. To celebrate the occasion, Shacknews reached out to Franchise Director Tymon Smektala to talk about it. ![]() The team's efforts continue, even as the game hits its first anniversary. It was an ambitious effort from the studio, one in which they looked to take the tried-and-true premise of the zombie apocalypse and craft a fleshed out (no pun intended), fully realized world. It's been a year since Techland crossed the finish line and released Dying Light 2: Stay Human. At the time, Swiss mechanical watches dominated world markets. In 1976 Omega introduced the Omega Chrono-Quartz, the world's first analogue-digital chronograph, which was succeeded within 12 months by the Calibre 1620, the company's first completely LCD chronograph wristwatch.ĭespite these dramatic advancements, the Swiss hesitated to embrace quartz watches. In 1974 Omega introduced the Omega Marine Chronometer, the first watch ever to be certified as a marine chronometer, accurate to 12 seconds per year using a quartz circuit that produces 2,400,000 vibrations per second. The rise of quartz Seiko Grand Quartz, produced in 1978 On, Hamilton introduced the Pulsar – the world's first electronic digital watch. The Beta 21 was released by numerous manufacturers including the Omega Electroquartz. The first Swiss quartz analog watch – the Ebauches SA Beta 21 – arrived at the 1970 Basel Fair. On 25 December 1969, Seiko unveiled the Astron, the world's first quartz watch, which marked the beginning of the quartz revolution. In 1967, both the CEH and Seiko presented prototypes of quartz wristwatches to the Neuchâtel Observatory competition. In 1966, prototypes of the world's first quartz pocket watch were unveiled by Seiko and Longines in the Neuchâtel Observatory's 1966 competition. This portable clock was used as a backup timer for marathon events in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. One of the first successes was a portable quartz clock called the Seiko Crystal Chronometer QC-951. In 1962, the Centre Electronique Horloger (CEH), consisting of around 20 Swiss watch manufacturers, was established in Neuchâtel to develop a Swiss-made quartz wristwatch, while simultaneously in Japan, Seiko was also working on an electric watch and developing quartz technology. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, both Seiko and a consortium of Switzerland's top watch firms, including Patek Philippe, Piaget, and Omega, fiercely competed to develop the first quartz wristwatch. Although Bulova did not have the first battery-powered wristwatch, the Accutron was a powerful catalyst, as by that time the Swiss watch-manufacturing industry was a mature industry with a centuries-old global market and deeply entrenched patterns of manufacturing, marketing, and sales. This watch was called the Accutron and was marketed by Bulova, starting in 1960. The tuning fork resonated at precisely 360 Hz and it powered the hands of the watch through an electromechanical gear train. In 1954, Swiss engineer Max Hetzel developed an electronic wristwatch that used an electrically charged tuning fork powered by a 1.35 volt battery. ![]() Although the Lip-Elgin enterprise produced only prototypes, in 1957 the first battery-driven watch was in production, the American-made Hamilton 500. In the early 1950s a joint venture between the Elgin Watch Company in the United States and Lip of France to produce an electromechanical watch – one powered by a small battery rather than an unwinding spring – laid the groundwork for the quartz watch. Thus, prior to the 1970s, the Swiss watch industry had 50% of the world watch market. The industry prospered in the absence of any real competition. As a result, the Swiss watch industry enjoyed an effective monopoly. History Before the crisis The first Swiss quartz clock, which was made after World War II (left), on display at the International Museum of Horology in La Chaux-de-Fondsĭuring World War II, Swiss neutrality permitted the watch industry to continue making consumer time-keeping apparatus, while the major nations of the world shifted timing apparatus production to timing devices for military ordnance. In general, quartz timepieces are much more accurate than mechanical timepieces, in addition to having a much lower sale price. The key advances included replacing the mechanical or electromechanical movement with a quartz clock movement as well as replacing analog displays with digital displays such as LED displays and later liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). ![]() The crisis started with the Astron, the world's first quartz watch, which was introduced by Seiko in December 1969. The quartz crisis took place amid the global Digital Revolution (or "Third Industrial Revolution") which was gaining momentum during the late 1950s. It caused a significant decline of the Swiss watchmaking industry, which chose to remain focused on traditional mechanical watches, while the majority of the world's watch production shifted to Japanese companies such as Seiko, Citizen, and Casio which embraced the new electronic technology. The quartz crisis was the upheaval in the watchmaking industry caused by the advent of quartz watches in the 1970s and early 1980s, that largely replaced mechanical watches around the world. 1970s–80s watchmaking industry upheaval Quartz movement of the Seiko Astron, 1969 Same feeling, and keep the people's life fresh all the time by our westlake equipments. Children are inherently interested in music. We know for sure that when it comes to learning, all kids will find music way more entertaining than math equations. So we know that music can enhance the retention of mathematical knowledge, but how do we use it? Well, there are many ways to get ‘the music’ into maths education, but the easiest ways to start are listed below. You might not have realized this, but your toddler’s favourite Wiggles song is already teaching them the basics of physics. Kids also love to play with tempo, which teaches them the concept of things increasing and decreasing. Kids learn to know what these are, which establishes patterns, and begin to anticipate them, which reinforces sequences. There are verses and choruses, sometimes a pre-chorus and often (especially in musicals) there’s a bridge. They might not know the exact names of them yet, but they understand that the song is made up of different parts. By the time they have a favourite song, they have already begun to learn this. Music also helps young learners to distinguish things like patterns and sequences. The kind of repetition that young learners are particularly responsive to is called ‘ rote ’, and it is a key player in helping them to form foundational mathematical skills, and this goes beyond them learning to say ‘1, 2, 3, 4’. ![]() In the beginning, it’s probably completely out of sync, but after a while, they get better because anyone who has kids knows that they love repetition (how many parents have seen Frozen a million times?). They might bop along to their favourite song and clap their hands together. Often one of the first ways kids learn counting is through rhythm. You might have seen children musically engaging with mathematics without even realizing it. Using Music to Build Mathematical Skills in Early Learners Mathematics is quite literally the study of the relationships between numbers, and basically, if you replace those numbers with notes, rhythm and timing, you have music. Most of us can remember elementary school music lessons where we learned that a waltz is normally in ‘¾’ timing. There’s also rhythms and tempos involved. There are whole notes, half notes and quarter notes, all of which follow the same rules that they would in a math equation. In a lot of ways, this practice is a bit similar to the principles of algebra. You need to understand that a certain piece of musical language translates or a particular movement, and when things change, you need to learn how to compensate for it. You’re doing all of this to express yourself artistically, but the process of turning that music on paper into a physical action is actually a bit of a mathematical equation in itself. You need to read music and translate that into a physical action with your hands, fingers, mouth, tongue, lungs, and even feet (if you’re lucky enough to be a drummer). You also often need to do several things at once. To effectively play music, you need to develop your critical thinking and problem-solving skills. For a start, music is actually a lot more analytical and mathematical than you might think. ![]() Music can definitely be used to help improve the mathematics skills of any studen t. How Music Can Help Improve Learning Mathematics ![]() So how exactly can music help improve the mathematical abilities of children? Does it help early learners? How can you integrate music into a math lesson? Read on to find out all this and more. Music and math actually have a lot more in common than you might think, and you can actually use music to help children learn mathematics. Well, they are different disciplines, but they’re also incredibly similar too. Music and mathematics couldn’t be any more different. Music is art, it’s creative, it’s artistic and incredibly different to math, right? Math is analytical, scientific and logical. It’s no surprise then that people tend to view music and mathematics in much the same way. We even associate them with different sides of the brain and give them different weights depending on the conversations we are having. For most of us, we tend to see them as completely different things. For almost as long as they have existed, arts and sciences have long stayed on separate sides of a fence. This assumption led to Private Eye magazine nicknaming him the "Phoney Pharaoh". Some have assumed that Fayed's addition of "Al-" to his name was to imply aristocratic origins, like "de" in French or "von" in German, though Al- does not have the same social connotations in Arabic. ![]() His brothers Ali and Salah followed suit at the time of their acquisition of the House of Fraser in the 1980s, though by the late 1980s, both had reverted to calling themselves simply "Fayed".
